Unbeknownst to many of you, I had a brief but life changing encounter with homelessness. Yes, you read that correctly! I was secretly living out of my Uber rental in Los Angeles during the early parts of 2019. It was one of the roughest, loneliest, powerfully life-changing ordeals I’ve ever faced…
Struggle seemed to have been chasing me...especially before launching Season 2 of Pedis & Mimosas. I became homeless for a short period of time. 43 days to be exact! My Uber income could no longer support my dream AND my living expenses, so I decided to rent a room from a friend. My expenses would have been cut in half, by far! I could now plan on putting those extra funds toward the development of my show. Lucky for me, my supposed friend left me hanging. So for the next 6 weeks my Uber rental became my home. This was such a life-changing and divinely guided time for me...to say the least!
I realized 4 years later that this experience had only been preparing me for today’s happenings. When I was homeless I cried everyday because I felt so lonely, lost, and uncared for. (Let me add: no one really knew. Not even my mom; who surely would have welcomed me back home with no problem. But I felt this fight was something I had to face alone). This experience surely made me tougher, wiser and more fearless than ever. So I wouldn’t change anything for the world.
During that difficult time period, I had no idea what or why God was doing what He was doing. But little did I know, this experience was only leading me to a woman named Marvilous.
During the pandemic, I had a chance to reflect on how I was using my platform. I made a promise to myself that once we were back to normal with production, I would focus on creating intentional content for my viewers. I wanted to ensure that my viewers felt inspired, motivated and hopeful whenever they tuned in to my show. So I began to think about how my bout with homelessness would do just that. I decided in that moment the experience would not be in vain.
So I teamed up with HOPICS, an amazing homeless outreach program located in DTLA. I described what I wanted to do and why I wanted to do it. They nominated Marvilous. I brought her onto the season finale of Pedis & Mimosas LIVE and surprised/blessed her with an apartment and rent paid in full for an entire year. And from there, this non-profit was born!
The ultimate vision I have for "Pedicares" is to drastically improve the quality of everyday life of struggling women of color giving them an opportunity to live their dreams as successful entrepreneurs!
